Before WWII some commercial FN actions came to the U.S. These had the thumb cutout in the left receiver wall and were essentially the military action, trigger, safety. I've seen many custom rifles made on these actions. In 1948 FN began manufacture of the first commercial, no thumb cutout, Mauser. These had no thumb cutout and a modified leaf type safety on the bolt sleeve with low swing bolt and a slightly modified trigger. They also had the modified military style trap door magazine floor plate. This is called the Deluxe action and they were used by several companies including J.C Higgins, H&R, Marlin, SAKO. Later (about 1957) they went to the Supreme action which is what Sako, Weatherby and Browning used. These guns had hinged floor plates, adjustable triggers and a sliding tang safety on the right side of the receiver rear. Browning further asked for more modifications the most obvious of which is the bolt release. These were made until 1974 and I think these are the best fit and finish of any Mauser action. Some say the left bolt raceway cut through the diaphragm weakened the action. The Deluxe actions didn't have this raceway cut and the Sears (J. Browning Serial Number Age![]() Browning Gun Values By Serial NumberHiggins) rifles are a good find if you prefer the original Mauser breeching system. The earliest long action SAKO rifles were made on this Deluxe action until 1962 when SAKO designed the L61R action. I have owned many very nice rifles made on these FN manufactured actions. Browning Safari rifles were originally with the Mauser non-rotating extractor throughout the life of the series except for belted magnums. About 1966 the magnum calibers used the modified extractor. CRF and belted cases didn't feed so smoothly (this is my guess). Browning Fn Safari PartsI have owned many of the Browning Safari rifles and only the magnums ever had the so called short extractor and my earlier 375 H&H, 458 WM, 308 and 358 Norma magnums have the long Mauser type. These were made from 1962 to 1964. I've seen Safari's made as late as 1966 in magnum with the long Mauser extractor but all after about then were the short extractor. (Brownings are date stamped as part of the serial number.) (L61-1234=1961). Actually, if I may beg to differ with you here.
